About Yumi Toyama

Yumi Toyama has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist in many countries across the globe including Italy, Germany, USA, Japan, Poland, and the Netherlands. She has recorded with Polish National Radio, Polish National Television, and her performance was televised on German TV-ARD 1. She won the Chopin Prize in A. Radziwill International Piano Competition in Poland, and was a laureate of the D. Anderson International Piano Competition in USA.
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, she began her studies at the age of 3, showing early signs of superb musicality and technical agility. She won many scholarships and awards through her teens, and went on to receive her Bachelors in piano performance at the Peabody Institute (Johns Hopkins University) in Baltimore, MD (USA). While studying with Julio Esteban at Peabody, she also began her extensive studies in chamber music literature, inspired while working with such legends as Leon Fleisher, Berl Senowski, Stephan Kates, American String Quartet, and Samuel Sander.
She pursued post-graduate studies at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw (Poland), mentored by Regina Smedzianka and Maria Szraiber. After earning her Master's degree, she taught at the Chopin Academy as an accompanying assistant, working with prestigious string department professors, such as Andrzej Wróbel (Cello), Marek Marczyk (Viola), Krzysztof Jakowicz, Slawomir Tomasik, Tadeusz Gadzina (Violin ) and Andrzej Mysinski (Contrabass).
Yumi Toyama has been residing in Amsterdam since 1999. She worked with the Holland Music Session from 2001-2006, cooperating with an international cast of distinguished artists such as Hermann Krebbers (Violin), Eduard Schmieder (Violin), Yfra Neamann (Violin), George Pauke (Violin) and Dimitri Ferschtman (Cello). She performed in various cities throughout Holland with promising young artists from the Holland Music Sessions, including Amsterdam, at the Concertgebouw. She also teaches privately; some students were winners of the Steinway Piano Concours and Prinses Christina Concours (2011).
